The focus of Treasure Coast Schools is on achieving excellence. St. Lucie County's mission is to enable all students to graduate from safe, caring schools equipped with knowledge, skills and the desire to succeed.
Already comprised of some of the best schools in the state, the fast growing educational institutions on the Treasure Coast are striving to give students access to programs from early education through post graduate level in both public and private settings.
In St. Lucie County, the entire community has made student performance their priority for the 2003-2004 school year and the Superintendent of Schools, Michael Lannon, is ready to lead. Sixty-nine percent of St. Lucie County Schools maintained or increased their academic grade in 2003. As the State has raised the bar, administrators, teachers, students, parents and volunteers have worked diligently to meet the challenge. St. Lucie County schools will receive $837,235 in school recognition dollars for student performance on the 2002 FCAT.
St. Lucie County uses "Controlled Choice" as the student assignment process and offers families stability and the option to choose a school that best meets the needs and interests of their child. The unique Magnet School concept attracts parents and students by offering special programs and requirements. Lincoln Park Academy is the top achieving high school in St. Lucie County and was named to the Challenge Index compiled by the Washington Post and Newsweek Magazine in 2003.
With student performance measured by the Florida Comprehensive Achievement test (FCAT), student scores in Martin County are the best on the Treasure Coast. Martin County also has the second highest graduation rate in Florida and the lowest dropout rate. While these facts please administrators, they still see room for improvement.
Also located in the Treasure Coast, Indian River County students posted their highest scores on the FCAT in the last five years. The improvements were at all grade levels. St. Edwards is a well regarded private school in Vero Beach. It operates a Lower, Middle and Upper School and includes a performing arts and fine center.
A large number of private schools are located throughout the Treasure Coast including religious based programs, Montessori and a very active network for home schooling.
Helping students prepare for the world of work through vocational programs as well as advanced education, Indian River Community College is a top performer among the state's 28 community colleges. It maintains campuses in the four county area. The new Technology Development and Training Center is designed to work with students and provide businesses with technical support.
Florida Atlantic University and Barry University are located in St. Lucie County. Local campuses allow students to complete a four year degree, pursue an advanced degree and provide ongoing continuing education and training without leaving home.
